Sakuna's parents were high-ranking deities who were loved by everyone, but by the time Sakuna was old enough to remember, they had left her and disappeared. Toyohana, her mother, is a harvest goddess who controls the earth. She arrived on Hinoe Island a long time ago, where eventually she met Sakuna's father - initially she was met by violence from the inhabitants, but as a goddess the attacks did nothing to her. She eventually made friends with them by healing one of them, then resided on the island. She is the one that gave Sakuna her raiment. Her present location is not known.

Trivia[]
- Toyahana is based on Kushinada from Japanese mythology.[1]
- Toyohana's name can be read as the combination of the characters for "toyo" and "hana" - "toyo" being a reference to fertility and "hana" representing the blessings of the earth. "Hana" is also similar to "hane", meaning wings, suggesting the existence of a world beyond the one we can see. [1]
- The "hime" in Toyohana-hime (Toyohana's full name) is written differently from the "hime" in her daughter Sakuna's (as in Sakuna-hime) name - this different character indicates that she is a lower-ranking goddess of human origins. In Yanato, there are different ways to write "hime" and "mikoto", implying different levels of importance.[1]
