In this page, common questions regarding rice farming will be addressed - if you have any feel free to add to the discussion!

FAQ[]

My rice keeps getting diseases no matter what I do. Why?[]

You may not be keeping on top of handling weeds and pests, which are your main sources of disease.

Where do I find remedies?[]

You may find them in some treasure boxes, but otherwise your main source of them will be via sending the others out gathering.

What causes hopperburn?[]

This happens when hoppers aren't taken care of - this usually happens when the rice is ripe and left out for too long.

My rice is Overgrown despite me putting in fertilizer and caring for the rice - how do I remove it?[]

Your rice is overgrown as a result from too much nutrients from fertilizer - ease up on root, kernel and leaf fertilizer for now.

Even though I put items in to increase (Aroma/Aesthetic/Yield/Hardness/Taste/Stickiness) it's not going up by much come harvest time. What am I doing wrong?[]

Be aware of when you put it in - rice grows more quickly during the day, and if your water temperature or your nutrient levels are too low, your rice will not take on stat gains as effectively.

No matter how thoroughly I till, I can't till 100% of the field. Is there something I'm missing?[]

There is no trick here - you simply have to be extremely thorough. Go around the edges at least once, and try to give the entire field a double check.

Should I sort with salt or mud?[]

Salt helps ward off disease, weeds and pests, but leaves your rice much more susceptible to salt damage, and mud is better for Aesthetic. See more at Sorting.

Should I sow thickly or thinly?[]

This depends on whether you want higher yield or higher quality - thinly for quality, thickly for yield.

I prayed to Lady Kamuhitsuki for sunny weather, but it's still raining. Does praying not work?[]

Praying to Kamuhitsuki does not remove or add rain instantly, but instead manipulates the chance of rain.

Are there any benefits to the kokibashi over the hand thresher/threshing machine?[]

None - using the threshing machine has no detriments. You earned it!

Are there any benefits to hulling by hand over the rice pounder/water mill?[]

None - the water mill is stress-free and easy to use, so don't feel guilty about using it.

Should I hull my rice entirely to obtain white rice, or just not bother and stick with brown rice?[]

This depends on whether you want better temporary stat boosts from meals and Aroma or permanent stat boosts for Sakuna - more at Hulling.

What do the percentages of frogs/spiders/snail mean?[]

The number goes up the more you catch, and determines how effective they are at dealing with pests. Note that ducks eat spiders, however.

Can I get frogs/spiders/snails to 100%?[]

You cannot - the percentages reset every winter. You can get it fairly high, however.

What are the downsides to leaving the rice farming to Tauemon?[]

Rice quality will suffer greatly if you leave everything to Tauemon, and some have even reported single digit stat gains after leaving it to him. If you want good rice, do it yourself.

The rice status screen has "Drained" show up even after I have water in the rice paddy - is this good or bad, and what do I do about it?[]

The "Drained" status simply determines whether you drained the field during the third offshoots phase - you don't need to worry about this. If the text is green, this means it was properly drained during that stage.

How do I unlock salt sorting?[]

You must have a certain amount of salt in your inventory the next time you get round to sorting.

When do I use (root/kernel/leaf) fertilizer?[]

You'll need to use each one at different stages - root for seedlings and 1st/2nd offshoots, kernel for third offshoots, and leaf for sprouting rice.

What distances do I need to plant for (a little far apart/a little close/balanced)?[]

This depends on what you want out of your rice - check Planting.

How does the amount of fertilizer nutrients affect the rice's growth and stats?[]

The larger the fertilizer values, the more effectively your rice can absorb stat gains. Take care not to add too much, however, or it will become overgrown.
