Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin Wiki

"What other deity commands both the martial prowess of a war god and the auspices of a harvest goddess with such dazzling aptitude?"

"Daughter of the war god Takeribi and the harvest goddess Toyohana. Sakuna has inherited both of her parents' abilities; as a result, she is regarded as a high-ranking goddess. For most of her life, however, her parents' whereabouts have been unknown, and she lacks a sense of responsibility without their guidance. Sakuna lazily spends her days in the capital...that is, until she encounters a group of humans. After a certain mishap in the capital, she is ordered to leave with the humans and exiled to Hinoe, Isle of Demons.

Sakuna's mission is to gain a foothold for the capital by cultivating the land and investigating the source of the demonic horde plaguing the island. Fortunately, her blessings as the daughter of Lady Toyohana the harvest goddess and Lord Takeribi the warrior god make her uniquely suited to the task. Striking a balance between working the fields and exploring the untamed wilderness is the key to survival not only for her, but for the innocent mortals she must protect." [1]

Banished to Hinoe Island, Sakuna begins as a spoiled high-ranking goddess who refuses to so much as even help out on the farm in the belief that a high-ranking goddess such as her should even work, and has little respect for the children of men she is forced to live with. Over time she learns the value of work, the power of rice, and the true value of friendship.

Sakuna's personality is somewhat abrasive and she speaks in a somewhat informal manner of speech, in contrast to her companion Tama, though her vocabulary itself is closer to that of Tama than Kinta.

Story[]

Being the descendant of high-ranking warrior god Lord Takeribi and high-ranking harvest goddess Lady Toyohana, Princess Sakuna had lived a decadent and carefree life, having everything taken care for her and being able to mostly sleep and drink her days away.

At the banquet in the Lofty Realm to offer tribute to Lady Kamuhitsuki, she found herself drunk and bored, and so she wandered out of Mihashira Capital. Eventually she found herself at the Bridge of Heaven, where she encountered Tauemon, Myrthe, Kaimaru, Kinta and Yui in a standoff with Ishimaru. After kicking Ishimaru off the bridge for a comment she considered a slight, she returned to the banquet, inadvertently leading the remaining children of men to the capital.

Sakuna chased the children of men through the capital, terminating at the rice garner. In a failed attempt to deliver punishment, Sakuna knocked over a lamp and started a fire that would destroy the divine garner. As punishment, Lady Kamuhitsuki banished Sakuna from the capital to the Isle of Demons to investigate the source of its demons and to claim it in Kamuhitsuki's name.

Relationships[]

Kokorowa: Sakuna considers Kokorowa to be a treasured friend, though often takes her for granted and at times talks down to her as a result of Kokorowa being born of a lower divine caste. Over the course of the game, Sakuna soon grows to appreciate Kokorowa and gladly accepts her offers of help around the farm.

Tauemon: Sakuna initially considers Tauemon a fool, often referring to him as "the fool samurai", thinking lowly of his skills and temperament, but eventually grows to appreciate his more laid-back approach to things and eventually learns to co-operate with him around the farm, accepting his help in growing the rice.

Myrthe: Sakuna is sometimes baffled at Myrthe's relentless positivity and faith in the face of adversity, but grows to respect it over time as she learns more of Myrthe's Formos-based faith. Sakuna also very much appreciates Myrthe's cooking every night for everyone, and is not as sharp with Myrthe as she is the others.

Kinta: Sakuna's relationship with Kinta frequently involves bickering and petty squabbles; they both appreciate each other's services as well as the sheer skill and hard work that goes into the other's work and are grateful for everything the other does, though they'll rarely tell each other directly without defaulting back to arguing with each other.

Yui: Sakuna and Yui have a fairly standard friendship with each other, though Sakuna does find Yui somewhat peculiar at times with the things she does, though as with Kinta, Sakuna values her services as a weaver as well as her work around the farm and the rice fields.

Kaimaru: Despite her sometimes abrasive nature, Sakuna is considerate of Kaimaru, and while his tendency to keep bringing animals back to the farm aggravates her, she is willing to put up with it, and eventually learns Kaimaru's ways of thinking.

Tama: Sakuna was raised by Tama in her parents' stead; she values him much as a companion, though their values and opinions on how to go about things can often differ, meaning that Sakuna often defies Tama's wishes. This does not come from a place of disrespect, however; Sakuna values Tama's advice and eventually they learn more about how to co-operate with each other and how the other works.

Lady Kamuhitsuki: Sakuna respects Lady Kamuhitsuki's divine authority as absolute, and while she is not conventionally afraid of Lady Kamuhitsuki, Sakuna defers absolutely to her will and will go as far as grovelling to stay in her good books.
